PDP Newsletter Highlights Challenges of Governing Jammu and Kashmir, Urges Centre for Conciliatory Approach

Jammu and Kashmir, 9th Dec. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in its monthly newsletter Speak Up, emphasized the complexities of governing Jammu and Kashmir, describing it as a “delicate dance” with the Centre. The party referenced its late patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who believed unconventional approaches were essential for the region’s greater good.

The PDP urged the BJP to adopt a conciliatory approach akin to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, citing recent dismissals of government employees as raising questions even under a popular government. It also noted that elections are merely the starting point, with the greater challenge lying in meeting public expectations amidst conflict and unemployment.

Addressing electricity shortages, the PDP advocated purchasing additional power during peak seasons and regaining control over hydroelectric assets to ensure long-term self-sufficiency. Promises like free electricity and gas cylinders were described as critical for improving lives if implemented effectively.

The first assembly session in eight years was hailed as a symbol of democracy, enabling debate and dissent without fear of detention. However, concerns were raised about the Ring Road project, particularly regarding inadequate land compensation and fears over the development of satellite townships potentially housing outsiders.

The newsletter called for robust measures such as skill-building workshops, scholarships, and career counseling to tackle unemployment, alongside addressing issues of infrastructure and public grievances.
