Beijing, 7th Dec. In a move aimed at reversing the consequences of its controversial one-child policy, China has instructed universities to teach “love education” to college students. The policy, which was implemented to control the country’s rapidly growing population, has now backfired, creating a generation of young people with a negative perception of marriage and relationships.
Recent reports reveal that many young Chinese students are hesitant to engage in relationships, citing the difficulty of balancing academics with romance. According to a survey conducted by China Population News, 57% of college students are not interested in pursuing romantic relationships, and they struggle to find a balance between their studies and social life.
In response to this, the Chinese government has encouraged universities to provide courses on marriage and relationships to spark interest in these topics. The aim is to educate students on modern concepts of marriage, population trends, and childbearing, thereby fostering more positive attitudes toward relationships and family life.
Experts argue that this initiative is vital as China faces an aging population, with its 1.4 billion people growing older. This demographic shift will likely increase government spending and place pressure on the economy. As a result, it is hoped that encouraging college students to engage with marriage and family life will help reverse the declining birthrate in the coming years.
