Rahul Gandhi Slams Government’s Plan to Increase GST Slabs

GG News Bureau
New Delhi, 7th Dec. The central government is reportedly preparing to increase GST slabs, a move that has sparked criticism from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. On the social media platform X, Gandhi accused the government of favoring capitalists while burdening ordinary citizens with higher taxes. He highlighted the growing income tax rates compared to corporate taxes and alleged that the Modi government was planning to further hike GST collection through new tax slabs.

In his post, Gandhi claimed that the government was planning to increase the GST on essential items, citing an increase in the tax rate for clothes priced above ₹1500 from 12% to 18%.

He called this decision “gross injustice,” asserting that the government’s actions to grant tax relief to billionaires and forgive massive loans were directly impacting the hard-earned income of poor and middle-class families.

He further said that Congress would continue to fight against this injustice and pressure the government to halt these unfair policies.

This post by Rahul Gandhi reignited discussions on GST rates.

Recently, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) dismissed rumors of changes in GST rates, clarifying that the GST Council had not yet discussed any such changes and had not received recommendations from the Group of Ministers (GoM). However, on December 3, the GoM held a meeting and decided to increase the tax on harmful goods, including cigarettes, tobacco, and carbonated drinks, to 35%.

Additionally, they recommended the rationalization of tax rates on clothes, proposing 5% tax on garments up to ₹1500, 18% tax on those between ₹1500 and ₹10,000, and 28% on clothes above ₹10,000.
