Udaipur, 26th Nov. Udaipur witnessed high tension on Monday as property disputes overshadowed the traditional rituals of anointing Vishvaraj Singh Mewar as the titular head of the historic Mewar dynasty. The scion of Maharana Pratap’s lineage, Vishvaraj Singh, also a BJP MLA, faced resistance from his uncle, Arvind Singh Mewar, and cousin, Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, who allegedly blocked his entry to the City Palace and Eklingnath Ji Temple.
Conflict Over Access
Vishvaraj Singh, recently anointed at Chittorgarh Fort following the demise of his father, Mahendra Singh Mewar, sought to perform key rituals, including prayers at a sacred fire, or dhuni, within the City Palace premises. However, entry was denied, leading to a standoff that escalated into violent protests outside the palace late at night.
In response, the district administration appointed a receiver to oversee the disputed portion of the palace. Udaipur Collector Arvind Poswal assured that peace had been restored and discussions to resolve the conflict were ongoing.
Property Dispute at Core
The disagreement centers around control over the City Palace and Eklingnath Ji Temple, both managed by Arvind Singh Mewar. Public notices warning against trespassing were issued by his lawyer on the day of the ceremony. Protesters expressed outrage, claiming the denial of access tarnished Mewar’s legacy.
Randheer Singh Bhindar, head of the erstwhile Bhindar royal family, criticized the actions of Lakshyaraj Singh, calling them a “blot on Mewar’s history.” Similarly, Devvrat Singh of the Salumbar royal family condemned the incident, describing it as a “horrible message” to the country.
Traditional Ceremonies Interrupted
The anointment ceremony at Chittorgarh adhered to centuries-old traditions, including the tilak ritual performed with blood by Devvrat Singh. However, the subsequent rituals at the City Palace and Eklingnath Ji Temple remained incomplete.
At Eklingnath Ji, Vishvaraj was to receive a silver staff symbolizing the position of Deewan of the ruling deity, Eklingji, a manifestation of Lord Shiva. The ceremony also involves replacing the white mourning turban with a colorful one to mark the end of mourning.
Historical Significance
The Mewar dynasty, renowned for its valor and resistance against Mughal emperor Akbar, continues to hold cultural and historical significance. Although the title of Maharana was abolished in 1971, the titular head remains a respected figure in the community.
The district administration continues its efforts to mediate between the parties while ensuring that peace prevails. The outcome of the dispute will likely shape the future of the Mewar family’s legacy.
