As suspense surrounds the Mahayuti alliance’s decision on the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra, a leader from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena has asserted that the Maratha community strongly favors Shinde’s continuation in the top post.

Shiv Sena spokesperson Sheetal Mhatre, speaking to reporters on Tuesday, emphasized that Shinde’s leadership is especially desirable in light of upcoming local body elections. “The Maratha community wants him to continue as Chief Minister, especially given his efforts in securing 10% reservation for the community and his contributions through the Annasaheb Patil and Sarathi corporations,” Mhatre said. She added that the demand for a Maratha leader to hold the CM position is gaining momentum.

Despite the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance securing a resounding victory with 230 seats in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly, consensus has yet to be reached on the choice for Chief Minister.

Eknath Shinde, a prominent leader from the Maratha community and hailing from Satara, is being supported by many in the community for his role in advancing their welfare. However, BJP’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is a Brahmin from Nagpur, has also emerged as a leading contender for the CM post following the BJP’s significant electoral success.

Meanwhile, a group of women met Shinde on Monday to express their gratitude for the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, a scheme offering eligible women Rs 1,500 per month. The scheme is credited with contributing to the ruling coalition’s strong showing in the elections.
