Mumbai, 25th Nov. NCP’s chief whip, Anil Patil, has claimed that unrest within the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) may lead to defections, with five to six MLAs possibly crossing over to the ruling Mahayuti alliance in the next four months.
The MVA, consisting of Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction), faced a significant setback in the Maharashtra assembly polls, securing only 46 of 288 seats. Meanwhile, the BJP-led Mahayuti, which includes Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction, secured a landslide victory with 230 seats.
Speaking to Marathi news channel ABP Majha on Sunday, Patil said, “There is tremendous unrest among some NCP (SP), Congress, and Shiv Sena (UBT) MLAs who have been re-elected. They feel uncertain about their future following MVA’s massive defeat.” He added that MLAs seeking development in their constituencies might prefer aligning with the ruling coalition.
Patil hinted at possible crossovers, stating, “It wouldn’t be surprising if five to six MLAs join the Mahayuti in the next four months.”
In the election results, the BJP emerged victorious in 132 seats, followed by Shinde’s Shiv Sena with 57 and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction with 41. The MVA’s Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) secured 20, 16, and 10 seats, respectively.
