New Delhi, 15th Nov. As Delhi grapples with severe air pollution, primary schools have transitioned to online classes, while measures are being implemented to protect students of Class 6 and above attending offline classes.
Sudha Acharya, Principal of ITL Public School, Dwarka, outlined several precautions, including restricting outdoor activities and promoting indoor alternatives like reading, painting, and games such as chess and carrom. “We’ve mandated the use of N95 masks, closed windows, and heightened care for students with pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma,” Acharya said. Additionally, the school emphasizes eco-friendly habits, including carpooling, hydration, and antioxidant-rich diets, while avoiding allergens and chemical irritants.
The city’s air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 411 on Friday morning, placing it in the “severe” category for the second consecutive day. In response, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has imposed GRAP 3 measures. Chief Minister Atishi announced that schools up to Class 5 would conduct online classes until further notice.
Rajiv Hassija, Principal of Indraprastha International School, Dwarka, explained that online lessons would be delivered through Microsoft Teams and smartboards, with recorded sessions provided for students to revisit missed lessons. “Students are required to wear uniforms during online classes, with 15-minute breaks between sessions for hydration and movement,” Hassija said. Secondary students’ outdoor activities, particularly before 10 am, have been suspended. The school is also encouraging green campus practices and consulting parents on healthy diets and home remedies, such as steam inhalation.
In MCD-run schools, online classes will be conducted, but teachers are required to be present on campus, according to Kuldeep Khatri, president of Shiksha Nyay Manch.
These measures aim to balance education and health amid Delhi’s worsening air quality crisis.
