Barnala, 12th Nov. BJP candidate Kewal Singh Dhillon, vying for the Barnala assembly seat in the upcoming by-poll, expressed confidence in his victory, asserting that BJP’s rule is synonymous with development and people are well aware of this. Dhillon, a former MLA, criticized the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab, claiming it had “failed” on all fronts, and accused both AAP and Congress of being “hand-in-glove” in their approach.
The Barnala seat became vacant following the election of local MLA Gurmeet Singh Hayer to the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat. Hayer, who previously won Barnala in both 2017 and 2022, is now replaced by Dhillon, who is up against Congress’s Kuldeep Singh Kaka Dhillon, AAP’s Harinder Singh Dhaliwal, Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) nominee Govind Singh Mann, and Independent candidate Gurdeep Singh Batth.
A seasoned politician, Kewal Singh Dhillon served as the MLA from Barnala in 2007 and 2012 under the Congress party banner before joining BJP in 2022. Although he lost the 2022 Sangrur Lok Sabha bypoll, he remains confident about his chances in this election.
During his campaign, Dhillon took credit for the creation of Barnala as a district in 2006 and for numerous development initiatives, including the rebuilding of roads, construction of a railway underbridge, and a network of roads for the benefit of Barnala residents.
He slammed the ruling AAP government for its lack of credibility and inability to address key issues like law and order, financial instability, and the grievances of farmers facing procurement delays and fertiliser shortages. Dhillon credited the Union government for stepping in to resolve the fertiliser issue after he raised it with Union Minister J.P. Nadda.
“People are fed up with the AAP government, and they know that wherever the BJP governs, development happens. This time, the Lotus will bloom in Barnala,” Dhillon said, predicting a BJP win in the November 20 bypolls. The counting of votes will be held on November 23.
