Power-Sharing Talks Intensify in Tamil Nadu as TVK Chief Vijay Makes Offer

Chennai, 2nd Nov. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief and actor Vijay’s recent offer of a share in power in Tamil Nadu has sparked renewed discussions about power-sharing within the ruling DMK alliance, which comprises Congress, the Left, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), and other parties.

Tamil Nadu Congress President K Selvaperunthagai clarified on Friday that any decision regarding power-sharing, should the ruling DMK return to power in 2026, lies solely with the Congress high command. He noted that the Congress had previously partnered with the DMK at the national level from 2004 to 2014 and had supported the DMK government unconditionally in 2006 when it was in a minority position.

Selvaperunthagai emphasized that while discussions about power-sharing are welcomed, the DMK must ultimately decide the terms, and the Congress cannot impose its will on the alliance. The DMK-led alliance has enjoyed success in the past three elections, including significant victories in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The call for power-sharing was initially raised by DMK ally VCK chief Thirumavalavan, who later attempted to manage the situation to prevent any fallout within the coalition. Historically, the Congress had been a dominant force in Tamil Nadu politics until the 1960s but has struggled to maintain its voter base since, often aligning with the DMK or AIADMK.

In a bid to bolster its presence in the state, the Congress party recently announced plans to strengthen village committees, with leaders engaging with communities at the grassroots level. This initiative, scheduled for December, aims to foster closer connections with local populations and enhance the party’s influence in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.
