New Delhi, 25th Oct. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) clarified on Friday that it has postponed, not canceled, a seminar on the West Asian conflict where Iranian Ambassador Iraj Elahi was scheduled to speak, citing logistical and protocol-related issues. Amitabh Mattoo, Dean of the School of International Studies (SIS), stated that the university intends to reschedule the event soon, potentially next month.
Mattoo also addressed concerns regarding two upcoming seminars involving the Palestinian and Lebanese ambassadors, originally set for November 7 and November 14. He clarified that official invitations for these events were not issued through the correct channels, explaining that the initial invitations were extended without consulting the Center for West Asian Studies.
Mattoo underscored that JNU remains committed to fostering balanced discussions. “There is no external pressure influencing this decision; our aim is to uphold the integrity of our academic platforms,” he said, adding that in the current global climate, a balanced representation of perspectives is essential.
The clarification comes after seminar coordinator Sima Baidya informed students of the Iranian ambassador’s seminar postponement and the supposed cancellation of the two other events. Reaffirming the university’s position, Mattoo assured that discussions on West Asian issues would continue with a focus on diverse perspectives.
