Chandigarh, 30th Sept. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expelled former Haryana minister Ranjit Singh Chautala and seven other leaders on Sunday after they announced their intention to contest the upcoming October 5 state Assembly elections as independent candidates.
Haryana BJP chief Mohan Lal Badoli confirmed the expulsions, which are set to last six years. Besides Chautala, the expelled leaders include Sandeep Garg (Ladwa), Zile Ram Sharma (Assandh), Devender Kadian (Ganaur), Bachan Singh Arya (Safidon), Radha Ahlawat (Meham), Naveen Goel (Gurugram), and Kehar Singh Rawat (Hathin).
Chautala, who represented the Rania seat as an independent MLA, quit the BJP after being denied a ticket from the same constituency. He had earlier resigned from the Assembly and joined the BJP before contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Hisar, a race he lost.
The 90-member Haryana Assembly will go to polls on October 5, with vote counting scheduled for October 8. The BJP aims to secure a third consecutive term in the state.
The expulsions follow a similar move by the Haryana Congress, which removed 13 leaders on Friday for “anti-party activities” after they, too, chose to contest the elections as independents. Despite the discontent over ticket allocations, both major parties have been able to pacify most of their leaders.
