Srinagar, 6th Sept. National Conference leader Omar Abdullah alleged on Friday that the BJP-ruled Centre is fielding independent candidates against him in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections as part of a conspiracy to silence him.
Addressing election rallies in Ganderbal, from where he is contesting, Abdullah reflected on his past electoral experiences, particularly a 2014 Lok Sabha election where Sheikh Abdul Rashid, who was jailed, managed to defeat him. “I always knew that Delhi would want to silence me, but I never thought they would go to this extent,” Abdullah said, citing Rashid’s campaign from jail as an example.
Abdullah expressed skepticism over the timing and location of his current opponent, Sarjan Ahmad Wagay alias Barkati, who is also in jail. “When I decided to contest from Ganderbal, reports started pouring in that another individual from jail would contest against me. I wondered if there was a conspiracy,” he stated.
He claimed that the BJP could not find a local candidate from Ganderbal, so they brought in Barkati from Zainapora-Shopian. Abdullah believed this was part of a deliberate attempt to undermine his candidacy. His team allegedly caught the BJP off guard by collecting nomination papers from multiple constituencies, revealing their strategy.
Abdullah emphasized that his fight is not just personal but represents the broader struggle for the dignity and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “When I speak, I speak for the people, raise their issues, and fight for our dignity,” he said.
He highlighted the significance of the upcoming assembly elections, marking the first in over a decade and the first since the August 5, 2019, changes in Jammu and Kashmir’s status. Abdullah urged voters to make an informed decision and expressed confidence in the electorate of Ganderbal to vote wisely despite the alleged conspiracies against him.
