Mumbai, 4th Sept. Zee Entertainment Enterprises has approached the Bombay High Court seeking an order for the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue a certification for its upcoming film, Emergency, directed by Kangana Ranaut. The court has scheduled a hearing for Wednesday.
The film, slated for release on September 6, has stirred controversy, with Sikh organizations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, alleging that it misrepresents their community and contains historical inaccuracies.
Zee Entertainment, the film’s producer, alleges that the CBFC has “illegally and arbitrarily” withheld the certification despite having the certificate ready.
A lawyer representing Zee Entertainment stated that the CBFC has the certification but is not issuing it. The plea was presented to a division bench comprising Justices B. P. Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla, who agreed to an urgent hearing.
Kangana Ranaut, who directs, co-produces, and stars in the film as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has accused the CBFC of delaying the release by stalling the certification process.
