Lucknow, 3rd Sept. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) President Mayawati on Tuesday endorsed the Supreme Court’s recent observation concerning the demolition of properties belonging to individuals involved in criminal cases. She emphasized that families of those accused should not be punished for the actions of the accused.
The Supreme Court, responding to multiple state administrations’ actions of demolishing the houses of criminal suspects, questioned the legality of such measures. The court, which is set to establish nationwide guidelines on the issue, argued that punitive action should be confined to the criminals themselves, not their families.
In a series of posts on X, Mayawati voiced her support for the Supreme Court’s approach. She criticized the practice of using bulldozers to demolish properties of accused individuals, asserting that such actions should be replaced with adherence to strict legal procedures. “Action against criminal elements should be taken under the law, and their families should not be punished for their crimes. Our party’s government has demonstrated this commitment by upholding the rule of law,” she stated.
Mayawati further suggested that the Supreme Court’s decision should guide the use of bulldozers, noting that it would be preferable if such extreme measures were unnecessary. She also called for stringent action against officials who, by colluding with criminal elements, fail to deliver justice to victims.
The Supreme Court’s observations came during a hearing on petitions filed by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind and other organizations, which sought to halt the demolition of properties belonging to those accused in riots and violence. The court clarified that while it would not condone unauthorized constructions or encroachments on public roads, it aimed to curb the demolition of properties linked to criminal accusations.
