Wellington, 8th August. President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Wellington, New Zealand, on August 8, 2024, as part of her State Visit to Fiji, New Zealand, and Timor-Leste. She was warmly received by Governor General Dame Cindy Kiro at Government House, where she was honored with a traditional Maori “Pōwhiri” ceremony and a Royal Guard of Honour.
During their meeting, both leaders praised the warm and friendly relationship between India and New Zealand, emphasizing the importance of expanding economic collaboration, particularly in trade and business.
President Murmu also addressed the New Zealand International Education Conference, where India is the ‘Country of Honour’ this year. She highlighted India’s rich tradition of knowledge and the advancements in education under the National Education Policy, which promotes multidisciplinary learning, critical thinking, and global competitiveness. She encouraged further educational exchanges, particularly in Artificial Intelligence, vocational training, and climate studies.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters of New Zealand also met with President Murmu. Discussions focused on deepening cultural ties, regional and global security, and enhancing bilateral cooperation.
President Murmu paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Wellington Railway Station and laid a wreath at the Pukeahu National War Memorial, accompanied by Governor General Kiro. In her final engagement in Wellington, she attended a banquet hosted by the Governor General, where she expressed optimism about future collaboration in areas such as artificial intelligence, green technologies, and agricultural technology.
After completing her engagements in Wellington, President Murmu departed for Auckland, where she is scheduled to address the Indian community.
