Chandigarh, 10th May.
Amritpal Singh, the leader of the separatist group “Waris Punjab De,” currently incarcerated in Assam’s Dibrugarh Jail, has petitioned the Punjab and Haryana High Court for temporary release. Singh aims to file his nomination as an independent candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Punjab’s Sri Khadoor Sahib constituency, scheduled for June 1.

In his plea, Singh requests a seven-day release from custody to complete the necessary formalities for filing his nomination before the impending deadline on May 14. He also seeks directives to the jail authorities for facilitating paperwork, including arranging for his photograph and opening a new bank account.

The petition underscores Singh’s eligibility as an Indian citizen and an elector from the Khadoor Sahib Constituency, emphasizing his right to contest the elections.

Singh’s father, Tarsem Singh, has corresponded with Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer and Amritsar’s District Magistrate, seeking guidance for his son’s nomination process.

Allegations within the petition suggest deliberate delays by the authorities in providing necessary instructions, despite correspondence from the Punjab poll chief, purportedly hindering Singh’s nomination filing process.

Singh’s detention stems from events in April of the previous year when his supporters clashed with police in Punjab’s Ajnala over the release of one of his aides, leading to his arrest under the National Security Act (NSA). Styled after Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, Singh’s arrest in Moga followed a month-long evasion of law enforcement, marked by vehicle switches and alterations in appearance.
