Turmoil at Air India Express: Mass Sick Leave Triggers Cancelation of 70+ Flights

New Delhi, 8th May.
Over 70 flights operated by Air India Express faced cancellation as a result of a significant number of cabin crew members calling in sick collectively, according to official sources disclosed on Wednesday.

The sudden sick leave reported by approximately 300 senior cabin crew members led to the cancellation of 79 international and domestic flights. Sources revealed that the crew members had also switched off their mobile phones, complicating communication efforts with airline management.

Allegations have surfaced regarding dissatisfaction among the cabin crew regarding new employment terms following the airline’s merger with the Tata Group. Some crew members claim unfair treatment, including being offered lower job positions despite clearing interviews, sources further disclosed.

Responding to the situation, an Air India Express spokesperson stated, “A section of our cabin crew has reported sick at the last minute, resulting in flight delays and cancellations. While we are engaging with the crew to understand the reasons behind these occurrences, our teams are actively addressing this issue to minimize any inconvenience caused to our guests.”

Expressing regret for the disruption caused, the spokesperson emphasized that such occurrences do not reflect the airline’s service standards. Passengers impacted by flight cancellations are assured of either a full refund or complimentary rescheduling to another date, the airline assured.

Social media platforms witnessed several complaints from passengers caught off-guard by the sudden cancellations, with some expressing disappointment after arriving at airports only to find out about their canceled flights. Air India Express responded to these complaints, apologizing for the inconvenience and citing operational reasons for the cancellations.
