Shillong, 6th May. Meghalaya’s tranquil landscape was shattered as a fierce storm, accompanied by torrential rains, wreaked havoc across several villages in the Khasi Jaintia Hills region, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
Officials reported significant damage to numerous homes and the displacement of over 400 individuals in the aftermath of the calamity.
A senior disaster management official disclosed that at least 13 villages bore the brunt of the tempest, with approximately 427 people grappling with the devastation inflicted upon their dwellings. The relentless onslaught of wind and rain spared no mercy, leaving a landscape marred by destruction and despair.
Meghalaya’s Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, wasted no time in mobilizing resources to aid those affected, asserting the administration’s commitment to providing relief on an urgent basis. In a message shared on social media platform X, the CM acknowledged the widespread damage inflicted by the inclement weather and underscored the imperative of prompt assistance to alleviate the suffering of the affected populace.
The swift response from district authorities was underscored by directives issued to deputy commissioners to remain vigilant and to extend aid as deemed necessary.
The Home Department echoed the sentiment of preparedness, emphasizing the paramount importance of swift and decisive action in the face of adversity.
