Amethi, 24th April.
As the anticipation mounts over the Congress’s candidate for the Amethi constituency, posters advocating for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s husband, Robert Vadra, have appeared outside the local party office. The posters boldly declare, “Amethi ki janta kare pukar, Robert Vadra ab ki baar,” echoing the sentiment that “the people of Amethi want Robert Vadra this time.”

Amethi is scheduled to cast its votes on May 20 in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha polls, with the deadline for filing nominations set for May 3. While the BJP has named sitting MP and Union Minister Smriti Irani as its candidate, the Congress is yet to finalize its nominee.

Historically, Amethi has been a stronghold for the Gandhis, having been represented in the past by prominent figures like Sanjay Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi. However, in the 2019 elections, Smriti Irani secured a remarkable victory over Rahul Gandhi, who subsequently won from Kerala’s Wayanad constituency. Rahul Gandhi is once again contesting from Wayanad this year, with Amethi’s candidate still pending. With nominations open until May 3, Rahul Gandhi may file his papers after the polling in the Kerala seat.

The potential candidacy of Robert Vadra has generated significant buzz, with Vadra expressing confidence that the people of Amethi would ensure his victory by a substantial margin if he were to contest. His remarks sparked the circulation of posters advocating for his candidacy on social media platforms.

Meanwhile, Smriti Irani has slammed the Congress for the delay in announcing its candidate and has taken aim at Rahul Gandhi and Robert Vadra. She has alleged that Rahul Gandhi will visit Amethi after April 26 to exploit caste dynamics and cast doubts on his commitment to the constituency. Irani has urged voters to remain vigilant against attempts to stoke caste-based divisions and emphasized the need for careful consideration in the electoral process.

The political atmosphere in Amethi remains charged as the contest between the BJP and Congress unfolds amidst shifting alliances and evolving strategies. As the election date draws nearer, all eyes remain on Amethi as it prepares to play a pivotal role in shaping its political future.
