Kolkata, 9th April.
After the detention of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders for holding a sit-in protest outside the Election Commission, party leader and MP Derek OBrien stated that they will persist with their demonstration at the Mandir Marg police station.

A 10-member delegation from the TMC had declared the sit-in protest after meeting with the Election Commission to demand the replacement of the heads of various central investigative agencies.

The TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, has accused the central probe agencies of unfairly targeting opposition parties before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections at the direction of the ruling BJP.

Derek OBrien informed reporters that their 24-hour sit-in protest will continue either inside or outside the police station. He mentioned that they were initially planning to protest outside the Election Commission but were now at the police station.

In addition to Derek OBrien, several other TMC members were also detained. The police stated that they took action due to the imposition of section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in the area near the Election Commission office, which prohibits large gatherings without permission.

Derek OBrien claimed that after their detention, they were driven around the city for about one and a half hours before being taken to the police station.

In a letter to the Election Commission, the TMC alleged that a BJP leader met with an NIA Superintendent of Police and handed over a list of TMC members to be targeted, accusing them of colluding to disrupt their election activities.

Derek OBrien emphasized that they are determined to continue their peaceful protest as a way to fight against what they perceive as an attack on democracy.
