Mumbai, 5th April. In a significant stride towards battling cancer, President Droupadi Murmu launched the nation’s inaugural home-grown gene therapy for cancer at the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, on Thursday.
President Murmu, addressing the momentous occasion, hailed the unveiling of India’s maiden gene therapy as a monumental breakthrough in the fight against cancer. Named “CAR-T cell therapy,” she emphasized its accessibility and affordability, offering newfound hope for humanity. Expressing confidence in its potential to rejuvenate numerous patients, she underscored its pivotal role in transforming lives.
CAR-T cell therapy, heralded as one of the most remarkable advancements in medical science, has long been available in developed nations.
President Murmu lauded India’s achievement in introducing the world’s most affordable CAR-T cell therapy, showcasing the nation’s commitment to the ‘Make in India’ initiative and fostering self-reliance.
The collaborative effort behind India’s pioneering CAR-T cell therapy involved the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Tata Memorial Hospital, and industry partner ImmunoACT. President Murmu hailed this as a commendable instance of academia-industry partnership, poised to inspire similar endeavors.
Highlighting the pivotal role of technology in this endeavor, President Murmu commended IIT Bombay’s renowned stature as a beacon of technological education.
She noted that the collaboration seamlessly integrated technology with healthcare, fostering partnerships with eminent institutions and industries. This synergy, she remarked, is a testament to IIT Bombay’s steadfast dedication to research and development over the past three decades, poised to propel India towards a technological renaissance.
