Kolkata, 11th March.
Ahead of the upcoming general elections, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saugata Roy has expressed unwavering confidence in securing victory for the fourth consecutive time from the Dum Dum constituency.

Following the announcement of his candidature on Sunday, Roy asserted his determination, stating, “Every election is a challenge. We have to go to the people. I have won three times from here (Dum Dum) and will try my best to win for the fourth time.”

In a strategic move, the TMC, under the leadership of Chairperson Mamata Banerjee, has unveiled its candidates for all 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal. Breaking away from the Mallikarjun Kharge-led INDIA bloc, the party is poised to contest the elections independently.

Notable surprises in the candidate list include former cricketers Yusuf Pathan and Kirti Azad, who will be contesting from Berhampore and Bardhaman Durgapur Lok Sabha seats, respectively.

However, the decision to field Pathan and Azad has drawn criticism from Sukanta Majumdar, President of the West Bengal BJP. Majumdar questioned TMC’s move, citing the candidates’ non-Bengali origins and likening them to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as outsiders.

Abhishek Banerjee, TMC General Secretary, unveiled the candidate list at the Brigade Parade ground, with Mamata Banerjee sharing the stage during the announcement. Notable inclusions are Banerjee’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, who will contest from Diamond Harbour, and Mahua Moitra, who has been given a ticket from Krishnanagar constituency after being expelled from Lok Sabha in the previous Winter session.

Additionally, Mukut Mani Adhikari, who recently quit the Bharatiya Janata Party, has been nominated from the Ranaghat Lok Sabha seat, while Shatrughan Sinha is set to contest from Asansol, a seat he previously won in a 2022 bypoll.

Asserting its commitment to stand by the common people against the central government’s alleged deprivation, TMC emphasized its dedication under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. The party declared its intention to contest elections not only in West Bengal but also in states like Assam, Uttar Pradesh, and Meghalaya.

The announcement marks the commencement of TMC’s campaign for the upcoming elections, with the party aiming to secure a significant victory amidst stiff competition.

In the previous Lok Sabha polls, TMC secured 22 seats, while the BJP made significant gains with 18 seats. The Congress clinched the remaining two seats. With the Lok Sabha polls expected to be held in April-May this year, the political landscape in West Bengal promises to be dynamic and fiercely contested.
