Bhopal, 4th March. Days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced the replacement of Pragya Singh Thakur as its candidate from the Bhopal Lok Sabha seat, the controversial leader has spoken out, stating that she had apologized to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for her remarks about Nathuram Godse back in 2019.
Thakur, who had described Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin as a “patriot,” now asserts that she never sought a ticket to contest polls and is willing to comply with the party’s directives.
Thakur, a figure mired in controversy due to her involvement in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, was elected to the Lok Sabha from Bhopal in the 2019 general elections. However, her remarks about Godse ignited widespread condemnation, including from Prime Minister Modi, who deemed them detrimental to societal harmony.
In a surprising move, the BJP excluded Thakur from its first list of 195 candidates, citing factors such as “winnability” and the need for maintaining decorum in public life.
Sources within the party revealed that provocative statements like those made by Thakur had contributed to her omission.
When questioned about the role of her controversial remarks in her replacement, Thakur defended herself, claiming she had always spoken the truth and that her words were twisted by the Opposition for political gain.
She emphasized that any unintended hurt caused to the Prime Minister was not her intention, and she had refrained from repeating such statements. Thakur accused the Congress of exploiting the situation to tarnish Modi’s image.
Asserting her backing for Alok Sharma, Thakur declared that his victory was assured and expressed confidence in the BJP’s ability to secure over 400 seats in the upcoming elections.
