New Delhi, 1st March. Clashes erupted at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) leaving three students injured following a confrontation between members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Left-backed groups on Thursday night, as confirmed by the police.
Videos circulated by student groups show chaos within the university campus as students engage in physical fights during a general body meeting ahead of the students’ union polls. The dispute originated from an argument over the selection of election committee members at the School of Languages. Scenes captured in the videos portray students exchanging blows, with one visibly injured and others resorting to throwing objects, including a bicycle.
A JNU official informed news agency PTI that some injured students were admitted to Safdarjung Hospital for treatment. Despite the incident, the university administration is yet to release an official statement, while both student factions have traded accusations, holding each other responsible for the clash.
Left-affiliated Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF) and All India Students Association (AISA) accused ABVP members of disrupting the meeting, alleging the use of casteist and sexist language to intimidate students and harass security personnel. Meanwhile, the ABVP blamed JNU Students’ Union and Students’ Federation of India (SFI) president, Aishe Ghosh, accusing her of orchestrating a “vicious attack” and targeting disabled students.
In response, AISA demanded accountability from the Vice-Chancellor’s office, urging action against the perpetrators visible in online videos. Conversely, the ABVP condemned the violence, describing it as a violation of educational principles and calling for swift repercussions against those responsible.
