Sharad Pawar Welcomes WFI’s Suspension, Says This Action Should Have Been Taken Earlier

NCP chief Sharad Pawar has welcomed the suspension of the newly-elected Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), but believes that the Sports Ministry should have made this decision earlier.

The Sports Ministry suspended the WFI on Sunday, just three days after new office bearers were elected, due to their failure to adhere to the provisions of the constitution when making decisions.

The ministry has requested that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) establish an ad-hoc panel to oversee the affairs of the WFI.

Pawar stated that action should have been taken against those responsible for misconduct towards female wrestlers a long time ago, but he still welcomes the decision, despite the delay.

The government suspended the WFI because they hastily announced the organization of the U-15 and U-20 nationals without following proper procedures and without giving wrestlers sufficient notice for preparation.

Shortly after being elected as WFI president, Sanjay Singh announced that the age group national championships would take place in Gonda, UP starting on December 28.

Notably, wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Vinesh Phogat accused BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former WFI president, of exploiting female wrestlers during his tenure.

Following the election of Brij Bhushan’s loyalist Sanjay Singh as WFI president, Malik announced her retirement from the sport, while Punia returned his Padma Shri medallion to the government.
