The district unit chief of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh, has finally ended his six-year-long vow of not wearing footwear. Ramdas Puri, who made the pledge in 2017, decided to wear shoes again after the BJP emerged victorious in the recent assembly elections.

Ramdas Puri, the president of the BJP’s Anuppur district, was joined by former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan as he put on his shoes for the first time in six years.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan explained that Ramdas Puri had stopped wearing footwear in 2017, declaring that he would only wear them again once the BJP formed a government in the state.

The BJP failed to form a government after the 2018 assembly elections. But even after the party came back to power in 2020 (after the Kamal Nath-led Congress government collapsed), Ramdas Puri did not start wearing shoes, Shivraj Singh Chouhan said in a video posted on his official X account.

“Ramdas Puri ji is a hardworking and dedicated party worker, who had given up wearing shoes and slippers since 2017. For six years, he remained barefoot in every season – summer, winter or rain. His resolution has been fulfilled. We all requested that now the resolution has been fulfilled and you should start wearing shoes,” he said.

In the recent assembly elections, the BJP achieved a resounding victory by winning 163 out of the 230 assembly seats, securing their position as the ruling party in the central state. The Congress, on the other hand, came in a distant second with only 66 assembly segments won. The Bharat Adivasi Party managed to secure one seat.
