GG News Bureau

New Delhi, 6th Nov. Heeralal Samariya was on Monday sworn in as the Chief Information Commissioner by President Droupadi Murmu.

This position was previously held by Y K Sinha, whose term ended on October 3.

President Murmu administered the oath of office to Samariya at a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

After Samariya’s appointment, there are now eight vacancies for Information Commissioners.

Currently, there are only two Information Commissioners in the Commission.

The Commission is led by the Chief Information Commissioner and can have a maximum of 10 Information Commissioners.

The appointment was made in response to a Supreme Court order on October 30, which asked the government to fill the vacant positions in order to uphold the Right to Information law.

The court also directed the Department of Personnel and Training to gather information from all states regarding the number of vacancies and pending cases in the state information commissions.
