Egyptian President Sisi Witnesses India’s Republic Day Parade

New Delhi, 26th Jan. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi joined a select group of world leaders in attending India’s Republic Day celebrations on Thursday.

As the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations, Sisi stood alongside President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and a slew of other leaders to watch the colorful parade on the majestic Kartavya Path.

The Egyptian president was the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations for the first time.

Sisi met with Modi on Wednesday, a day after he arrived in Egypt for a three-day visit. India invites world leaders to its Republic Day celebrations every year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was no Republic Day Chief Guest in 2021 or 2022.

The Republic Day celebrations in 2020 were headlined by then-Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was the chief guest at the Republic Day parade in 2019, while leaders from all ten ASEAN countries attended the celebrations in 2018.

Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was the chief guest at the celebrations in 2017, while then-French President Francois Hollande attended in 2016.

Former US President Barack Obama attended the parade in 2015.

The parade’s chief guest in 2014 was then-Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, while Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck attended in 2013.

Nicolas Sarkozy, Vladimir Putin, Nelson Mandela, John Major, Mohammed Khatami, and Jacques Chirac are among the heads of state and government who have attended the Republic Day celebrations.

The celebrations were attended by then-British Prime Minister John Major in 1993, Nelson Mandela as then-South African President in 1995, and South Korean President Lee Myung Bak in 2010.

Sarkozy attended the celebrations as French President in 2008, while another French President, Chirac, attended in 1998.

Other world leaders who have attended the celebrations include Nepal’s King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev in 1999, Iran’s then-President Mohammad Khatami in 2003, Indonesia’s then-President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2011, and Maldives President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in 1991.
