Chennai, 3rd Dec. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed deep sorrow over the tragic deaths of seven people, including five children, in a rain-related landslide in Thiruvannamalai district. He announced ₹5 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund.
The victims, comprising a family of four and three children from the neighborhood, were buried under mud and rocks after a boulder rolled down from Annamalaiyar Hill during torrential rain on December 1. The heavy rainfall, triggered by Cyclone Fengal, caused a mud slip on the hilltop, dislodging the boulder.
The disaster struck a house in VOC Nagar at the foothills, completely burying it under the debris. Despite extensive rescue efforts by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police, and fire services, the bodies were recovered on December 2.
Among the victims were Rajkumar (32), his wife Meena (27), their two children, and three young girls from nearby homes. All the children were under 14 years old.
According to the district collector, D. Bhaskar Pandian, the tragedy unfolded when Rajkumar attempted to assess damage to his home after a tree fell due to the rain. As he tried to open the door, the boulder crashed down, crushing the house.
Chief Minister Stalin extended condolences to the bereaved families, stating, “I express my deepest sympathies to the families who have lost their loved ones in this unfortunate incident.”
