Munambam– Hours after the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in Parliament, 50 residents involved in a prolonged land dispute in Munambam, Kerala, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday. The induction took place in the presence of BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar and other National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders.
The residents, who have been protesting for 174 days against alleged Waqf Board land claims, have received strong support from the Catholic Church. NDA leaders, led by Chandrasekhar, assured them of full backing in securing their revenue rights. BJP leaders Shaun George, P.K. Krishnadas, and others were also present during the visit.
The protestors expressed hope that the new Waqf (Amendment) Bill would help resolve the land dispute and requested Chandrasekhar to arrange a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convey their gratitude. The BJP leader assured them that he would coordinate with the Prime Minister’s Office for the meeting.
Addressing the protesters and the ‘Munambam Bhoo Samrakshana Samithi,’ Chandrasekhar emphasized that their long-ignored struggle had now gained national attention. “We will continue to stand with you until your revenue rights are restored. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a leader who keeps his promises,” he stated. As a token of appreciation, the protest committee presented Chandrasekhar with an image of The Last Supper of Christ.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan questioned whether the Waqf (Amendment) Bill would genuinely resolve the dispute, suggesting that the protest stemmed from a misunderstanding. He asserted that no assurance had been given regarding a resolution through the bill.
