Itanagar, 17th Feb. A clash between protesters and security personnel in Itanagar on Friday caused injuries to ten people, including four security officials, during a protest against the recent leak of the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission examination question paper.
The Arunachal Pradesh government has postponed the swearing-in ceremony for state Public Service Commission members for the time being.
“To control the situation, security personnel were forced to use tear gas and resort to baton charges upon the protesters. Adequate security personnel deployed in Itanagar capital region to to deal with any untoward situation and to maintain law & order,” Chukhu Apa, IGP (L&O) said.
According to the IGP, protesters demanded that the swearing-in ceremony of the chairperson and newly appointed members of the State Public Service Commission be postponed.
“They should have respected the law and order,” Chukhu Apa, IGP, law and order, said.
According to reports, the Pan Arunachal Join Steering Committee (PAJSC) observed a mass movement and declared a 12-hour bandh on Friday in response to the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) paper leak case.
Despite the administration’s imposition of Section 144, hundreds of youths took to the streets to stage protests and raise slogans against the state government.
The situation turned violent when some protesters burnt down a motorcycle, and one four-wheeler, damaged properties and pelted stones at the security personnel,” the IGP said.
Previously, on December 9, 2023, the Central Bureau of Investigation filed a chargesheet against eight accused in an ongoing investigation of a case involving the alleged leakage of a question paper from an examination held by the Arunachal Pradesh Public Service Commission for the position of Assistant Engineer (Civil).
According to the top police official, the situation is still tense.
