New Delhi:
A delegation of Non-Motorised Transportation (NMT) with special emphasis to promote Cycling as a mean to overcome the issues of transfix congestion, life style diseases, pollution and daily commuting challenging called on the Vice President of India, Shri M. Hamid Ansari, in new Delhi on 5th Dec.
The delegation led by Tarun Vijay, Member of Parliament appealed to the Vice President to encourage cycling in urban India and one way was to set up city level NMT Cells with specific targets to promote cycling. Promoting cycling has now become an urgent need to meet the key challenges faced by people living in Urban India.
]The urban India has seen tremendous growth and development over last decade, but the development had also brought the above mentioned significant challenges for the majority of population living in urban India. These challenges are only expected to multiply with time unless proper steps are taken on an urgent basis. It has been found out through focus groups and market research in Gurgaon that 78 per cent of daily commuters in Gurgaon and 59 per cent of metro users in Delhi belonging to low to middle income group, are willing to shift to cycling provided there is a cycle infrastructure like cycle parking and cycle lanes.
