Ernakulam, Kerala: Bishop Franco Mulakkal, accused of rape by a Kerala nun, was arrested in Kochi on Friday after interrogation by the state police, reports said. The police are likely to seek his two-day custodial remand.
Bishop Franco Mulakkal was being questioned at the Crime Branch office today for third consecutive day by a five-member special investigation team (SIT).
Soon after the Bishop’s arrest, the protesting nuns erupted in joy and thanked the administration for apprehending the rape accused.
The Vatican had on Thursday divested Mulakkal, who was the bishop of the Jalandhar diocese of Missionaries of Jesus, of his pastoral responsibilities “temporarily”.
Mulakkal, who has been accused by the nun’s of repeated sexual assault between 2014 and 2016, recently temporarily relinquished his administrative responsibilities. He also denied the allegations, claiming that it was attempt to tarnish him image.
